A Fresh Product Review on E-bike kits: How to choose what’s right for you

For those of you who’ve been planning to go green, in terms of an electric bike, then there are a few things you’ll need to know before getting started. In this post, you will discover 5 important facts about E-bike kits, and how you can get the most out of any of the ones you may choose. By reading the information below, you will have a better handle on what is available, and how you can best put your new E-bike kit to use.

1.)What Kind of E-bike kits are available?

There are a number of E-bike kits available on the market, and determining the best kit for your needs will be determined by what it will be used for most. Are you a daily commuter? What is the distance you travel each day? Are there many hills in your area? Do you already have a bike to convert? Do you want a kit or a complete bike already electrified?
If you can answer some of the questions above before looking for your conversion kit, you have a better chance finding just what you need. For instance, if I only commute a short distance each day and there are no hills, you may be able to get a low budget 24volt/250watt kit. If you do a bit more traveling and there are some moderate hills, a 36v/600watt kit will suffice. However, if you do some heavy traveling, with hills in your area, you may want to look at a 48v/1000watt kit.

2.)How do I choose one over another?

Choosing one over the other will be quite easy if you’ve taken the time to analyze the questions and info above. The reason being, 90% of the kits made are from China. The ones made in the USA are not for those of you who are budget minded. In addition, the ones from China will hold up rather well because the Chinese have been doing this for quite some time. There are a number of conversion kits available and most of those are very easy to install.

3.)How do I know if a kit will fit my bike?

Out of all the conversion kits I’ve owned and reviewed, I haven’t found any of them that do not fit on a standard mountain bike frame. However, there are some modifications that will be needed when buying some of the larger powered kits. Those mods are simply grinding out the front or rear axle ports on your bike forks or rear axle mounts. I’ve really only seen one or two kits that fit 27′s or 700 type bikes. And, if this is your first time, find an older mountain bike to experiment with, you probably have one or you know someone who is eager to get rid of theirs.

4.)What types of batteries are best?

Most kits will come with batteries. However, you may find it more cost effective to build your own battery packs. There are a few different options here, but to make life simple, I’ll just talk about SLA vs LifePo4 battery packs. SLA or Sealed Acid Batteries were probably the first batteries used for E-bikes, but the problem is, they are heavy. LifePo4 batteries are Lithium-Ion which are much lighter, and carry a charge much, much longer than SLA. SLA’s are much cheaper, and LifePo4′s are much more expensive, so this will be a personal choice. For beginners, get the SLA’s to try out and later you can upgrade.

5.)Where can I find the best E-bike kits?

There are a number of places you can buy E-bike kits, but I recommend buying them from places they can be returned to. Never buy anything from a site or location you aren’t familiar with because you could end up having trouble with something and end up getting no support. There are also a number of bike shops in your area that might be selling conversion kits, so I would also check those sources as well.
